Player Development

Introduction

The Player Pathway and Development for the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union focuses on an inter-disciplinary and integrated approach to rugby development. It allows the rugby community to gain a clear vision for the various aspects of player development at all levels (mini to senior international) while allowing individuals to join and exit the rugby Hong Kong pathways at any point.

The player development model illustrates the HKRFU’s player development structure through the community clubs and schools structure alongside the International squads and development programmes directly managed and supported by the HKRFU and our full time HKRFU staff.

The 1-4 Step structure illustrated in the model is an indication of critical development phases within our game and within an individual’s personal development e.g. education and career. These are specific to the Hong Kong culture and environment.

These steps probably best represent exit and entry levels for all players within the present Hong Kong rugby culture, while also providing a choice regarding playing level and/or ability e.g. social player or international.

The overall pathway has identified key areas to be developed within the HKRFU strategic plan along with critical areas that need to be developed over the next 4 years.

Community (senior and age grade) and tertiary rugby has grown considerably over the past 3 years placing additional demands on player support structures/ facilities and the need for additional coach development.

Through an integrated approach and the HKRFU Player Development Pathway we are broadening and developing the player base within our younger squad development programmes.

Our structures are aimed at to supporting the increased playing numbers within local and poorly resourced clubs as well as an ever expanding HK tertiary system.
