New Year's Day Youth Tournament 2012
HKRFU host 45th Standard Chartered New Year’s Day Youth Tournament
bringing together best local and overseas youth rugby players
[1 January 2012, Hong Kong] The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) successfully hosted the 45th annual Standard Chartered New Year’s Day Youth Tournament at the Hong Kong Football Club today. This year there were seven matches featuring altogether 14 boys and girls teams from U12s, U14s, U16s, U18s and U19s. The teams had a mix of local and overseas students, including two Hong Kong youth national squads in the form of the Hong Kong Under 16 and Under 18 teams.
“It’s another successful and exciting tournament this year,” said the HKRFU Head of Community and Development Brandon Huang, “It’s been a wonderful tradition that the HKRFU start the New Year with the hosting of this tournament. It marks the start of another busy year for Hong Kong rugby and there's no better way to celebrate the festive season than by joining the rugby action here today. We would like to thank our sponsors Standard Chartered, for their great support, all the participating teams and the management, the guests and fans who joined us today, as well as our volunteers and staff.”
Huang continued, “The tournament has proved to be a great stage for young rugby players to show their skills and many have gone on to appear in national team colours. Lotsof current national senior players like Keith Robertson, Fan Shun-kei, Tsang Hing-hung, Mark Wright, as well as the young promising rugby star Natasha Olsen-Thorneare good examples. Their fine skill level was first identified at the New Year's Day Tournament."
The first match kicked off in the morning with the U12 teams competing for the Waterford Bowl. The event culminated with the two boys matches that saw the national U16s and U18s up against the overseas barbarians select teams for the George White Trophy and Wright-Nalyor/Middlesex Cup respectively.
The very special “Larry Abel Trophy”, which was to recognize the best and fairest player of the whole tournament, was presented to Oscar Kurten from the Under 16 Overseas Barbarians.
