Dear Coaches,
Please find below outcomes from the meeting held with Jarrad Gallagher (IRB Asian Regional Development Manager) regarding the alignment of HKRFU Coach Education Courses with IRB Courses. I have also provided further information at the bottom of his e-mail.

RE: Realignment, Amalgamation and Updating of HKRFU Courses with IRB Courses

Congratulations on the proactive work of the Coach education programme in Hong Kong .

Further to our meeting regarding the HKRFU Coaching Courses I wish to confirm that the 2005-06 & 2006-07 HKRFU Level 1 Coaching Course & 2007-08 HKRFU Level 2 Coaching Course The content of which is the same as the HKRFU Level 1 Coaching Course that was delivered in 2005 to 2007) meets the following standard:

  • The Course meets all the criteria for the IRB Level 1 Coaching Course (Certificates will be issued by the IRB).
  • To meet the criteria and standard to attain accreditation for the IRB Level 2 Coaching Course the following steps need to take place:
    • A further 6 hour module will need to take place to cover the following content

§ Principles of Attack and Defence

§ Relationship between key factor analysis and the principles of attack and defence

§ Laws of the game

o Accreditation:

§ Attendance and participation in all modules

§ Submission of a 12 week coaching diary

§ Achievement of satisfactory 45 minute practical assessment

§ Achievement of 80% in open book tests

§ Sign Code of Conduct

It is very worthwhile to align yourself with IRB as this is where the database is housed for all accredited coaches.

We will continue to update our courses to meet the current laws, trends and best practice to further assist our coaches, players, match official and administrators.

Regards,

Jarrad

Regional Development Manager Asia
International Rugby Board

The following actions will now take place:

  • All coaches that have completed the 2005-06 & 2006-07 HKRFU Level 1 Coaching Course & 2007-08 HKRFU Level 2 Coaching Course will have their names forwarded to the IRB and be certified as Level 1 Coaches. They will also be registered on their IRB data base.
  • A number of 6 Hours modules will be planned to accommodate those coaches who wish to attain the level two cerificate. This 6 hour module will be open to all coaches that have attended the 2005-06 & 2006-07 HKRFU Level 1 Coaching Course & 2007-08 HKRFU Level 2
    • Assessments of practical activity will need to be coordinated

As inimated in his e-mail, Jarrad is very happy and supportive of the Hong Kong Coach Education programme. Whilst aligning ourselves with the updated IRB Courses, we will also continue to service the needs of the HK rugby community through the provision of Coaching Seminars. We will also ensure that the U8’s course (that proved such a success) is delivered at the start of next season.

Find attached a document that outlines the requirement for the IRB Level 1 and 2 courses. I have also provided a link to the IRB website for the new Rugby Ready course. This programme follows in the footsteps of ‘Rugby Smart and Smart Rugby’ programmes successfully delivered in New Zealand and Australia and is intended to provide a global education resource for the games coaches in the important areas of discipline, match preparation, correct technique, injury prevention and injury management.

I believe that the Rugby Ready programme (3 hours) will become mandatory and that coaches will need to reaccredit themselves every 2 years so that all coaches stay current with the related topics. The Rugby Ready progranmme can be delivered independently or ‘bolted on to the Level 1 course.
