Colts League

Youth rugby includes all players, both boys and girls, from under 7 to under 19 age years old. Youth rugby is played at schools as well as in Clubs. The younger players from both are classed under "mini rugby" whilst U14 to U19 are known as "Colts".

Schools in Hong Kong administer their own rugby leagues and fall under the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation whilst Clubs are the responsibility of the HK Colts Association, part of the HKRFU.

As players progress through the different stages of mini-rugby the skills they require for rugby become more specific. Once they become teenagers their physical development changes and they need specific exercise that builds strength and instils confidence.

Colts rugby acts as the link from mini rugby to the senior game over a period of seven years. The natural progression through Colts breaks down into age bands which in HK are U14, U16, U18 and U19. As the number of players grows it is the aim to have single year groups.

Players are placed into their respective groups depending upon their age at 1st January each year. For the forthcoming season 2005/6 the following criteria applies :

Under 14 - born between 1 st Jan 1993 and 31 st Dec 1994
Under 16 - born between 1 st Jan 1991 and 31 st Dec 1992
Under 18 - born between 1 st Jan 1989 and 31 st Dec 1990
Under 19 - born between 1 st Jan 1988 and 31 st Dec 1989

Schools in HK use a different description for age brackets but they equate as follows :

Under 14 = 'C' grade
Under 16 = 'B' grade
Under 19 = 'A' grade

All the boys teams will focus on 15-a-side rugby throughout their Colts years although tournaments will be played at the 7-a-side and 10-a-side game.

Girls rugby is developing fast in HK and next season should see leagues formed for U14, U16 and U19 - however these will also be in the 7-a-side format, not 15-a-side.

So, join in the fun, keep fit and learn new skills. Generally Colts will play on a Sunday and you will find a list of participating Clubs in the "Contacts" section of this site. Placesare available so there is one close to you please join that club.

If you need any assistance to decide or to get advice please contact the Club directly or the Colts Association.

Safety First

Whilst everyone associated with Colts Rugby wants the players to have fun, we do stress the need for safety in play and in equipment.

All players for Clubs should wear mouthguards to protect the teeth and, whilst optional, the use of headgear and shoulder pads is promoted. All of these are easily available in Sports Shops or through the Clubs.

The coaching itself also involves safety through well trained play. Teams will be adopting virtually full adult rules for their matches, but coaches and referees are empowered to change some areas of play (e.g. non-contest scrums) if they consider any danger of injury exists.

At all times, players are coached to a suitable standard for safe and enjoyable competition
