Philips Mini Rugby Community Programme Ready for Phase 2!

Primary schools in the New Territories are bracing themselves for Phase 2 of the Philips Mini Rugby Community Programme, which will kick-off next week. The objective of the scheme is for HKRFU to work with local mini clubs to identify target primary schools which hopefully will be fertile recruitment grounds for new little players; the Union then liaise with the chosen schools to arrange a "Philips School Visit" during which reps from the Union, mini club and Philips introduce rugby to pupils aged 8-9 years through fun games and challenges. Pupils are then invited to join the local mini club for a free 4 week trial period, after which hopefully they will have caught the "rugby bug" and sign up for membership.

Thanks to the generous support of Philips, each child is provided with a t-shirt and mouth guard, and schools receive a "Philips Rugby Starter Pack" of DVD, branded ball, and a special Philips gift. In addition the mini club is provided with a designated "Philips Community Coach" who attends training every Sunday to help with the increase in numbers generated by the scheme.

In Phase 1, which ran in November and December last year, schools in Shatin, Hong Lok Yuen, Tin Shui Wai and Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun were visited and Phase 2 will again concentrate on these areas before targeting Kowloon and HK Island later in the year.
