DeA Dicky Top of the Class!

One year ago 17 year old DeA Tigers’ winger Dicky Young’s life went through a dramatic transformation…thanks to the support of DeA Rugby Club’s Larry Abel Trust Fund Dicky was given the opportunity to leave his Cheung Sha Wan secondary school and study at Brooke House College in England.

A year on, and Dicky is half way through a demanding two year ‘A’ level course studying maths, physics, chemistry and physical education with dreams of going on to study Sports Science at the prestigious Loughborough University. Ms Rachel Borland, Deputy Director of Brooke’s, is delighted with Dicky’s progress, calling him a "lovely all-round chap", and notes proudly that he has grown tremendously in confidence and independence over the academic year.

His rugby has come on as well; Dicky has come up through the Hong Kong U14, U16 and U19 rep teams, and reckons that the training he received from the likes of DeA’s LIU Kwok-leung, U16 Coach Bruce Aitchison, and U19 Coach Quinton Wrigley has helped him to win the coveted "Colts Player of the Year" award at Kibworth Rugby Club for the 2004/05 season.

Dicky is not the first DeA boy to attend Brooke’s - Ben HO and Joshua LAW were also supported in their studies there by the Trust Fund - and he’s not the only young rugby player on scholarship at the moment, as HKRFU David S. Davies Academy member LI Chi-yung is about to start his third year at Hartpury College (see below). "I would recommend the experience to any youngster in Hong Kong lucky enough to get the chance," says Dicky, "Brooke’s is a great environment to be part of". And his hopes for the future? "Loughborough, then back to Hong Kong and hopefully a Hong Kong international cap!" And with Dicky’s success so far, who would bet against that!
