RUGBY COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR FIJI

18th Oct 2016

To coincide with Ben Ryan's visit to Hong Kong for the Sevens Long Lunch last week, a kit drive was organized amongst the Hong Kong mini rugby clubs for the children of Fiji. Fiji Airways ambassador and newly crowned Chief, Ben Ryan kindly gave up time from his extremely busy schedule to come down to Kings Park on Sunday morning to accept the donations. Not many communities are more generous than the rugby community and the Minis clubs exemplify that - many regularly donate to underprivileged youngsters around the region including programmes in Samoa, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines.

Over 15 boxes and bags of mini's jerseys, shorts, socks, balls, and boots were donated by Hong Kong clubs, with USRC Tigers and Flying Kukris leading the way along with a number of individual donations from Kowloon RFC, and Hong Kong Scottish - over 80% of the kit is brand new.

Ben is delighted to be a part of this and has a number of ideas about who would be best to distribute the donations in Fiji. Some will go to Fiji Red Cross, a number of Foreign embassies for their charity sport programmes and a few local charities that Ben has been involved with in the past.

Many thanks to all involved for helping create such a wonderful and worthwhile morning. Special mention and 'vinaka vaka levu' to Fiji Airways and Communique for organising the transport and shipping to Fiji, and the Fiji Ambassador, Fiji Consul-General and Fiji Chamber of Commerce for their support.
