SHANDONG JULY 2016

28th Jul 2016

In the week commencing 18th July Head of Elite Player Development and National XV Coach Andrew Hall alongside National Performance Coach Sailo Lai and Development Rugby Manager Fungie travelled to the North East tip of Shandgong Province to support CRU’s XV’s training camp.

A 40+ strong group of talented U19 players assembled at Wei Hai stadium where Andrew, Sailo and Fungie led two days of skills and games.A mixture of experienced sevens players and relative beginners provided a broad range of ability with all player’s efforts (and thankfully enjoyment!) clear to see.

As well as helping to support the players the aim of our trip was to also share ideas with China’s coaches offering them rare opportunities in the near future of attending our World Rugby run coaching courses in Hong Kong too.

With any tour we were naturally keen to immerse ourselves in local cultures and traditions. Our Lonely Planet guide to Shandong however failed to mention that this would include savoring the local wine that tipped the scale at 50% proof! With a taste more akin to aviation fuel we managed to sip our way through dinner leaving our hosts with heavier heads come the next morning!

A great experience with thanks to the players and all at the CRU for their hospitality.
