CAUSEWAY BAY OUTLAST HK SCOTTISH IN KPMG PREMIERSHIP A THRILLER

17th Dec 2019

Ng Wing-yee scored an 80th-minute try to give SCAA First Pacific Causeway Bay a dramatic 10-5 win over Bloomberg HK Scottish Kukris in the final KPMG Premiership A game of 2019 last Saturday.

Down 5-0 late, Causeway Bay scored twice in the final ten minutes to claim the memorable comeback victory.

It was a tight battle all around, with the score nil-nil after forty minutes, with winger Chung Hau-yi breaking the impasse in the 65th minute with her try for Scottish giving them a 5-0 lead.

That set the stage for a dramatic finish with Causeway Bay’s forwards stepping up to score twice in eh final ten minutes.  Prop Ho Hau-yan levelled the scores for Causeway Bay just five minutes after Chung’s effort. Both teams missed what would turn out to be crucial conversions to leave the score drawn at 5-all inside the final ten minutes.

Ng broke Scottish hearts with her superb effort, helping to create pressure that forced a turnover from Scottish deep in their own half. Ng gained possession and started the drive, supporting the play brilliantly to be in to finish at the death, as well, handing an emotional win to the Hong Kong islanders.

It was just reward for a balanced and smart performance for Causeway Bay coach Prince Wong, who was delighted with the hard fought result.

“Our defence improved a lot, and our mentality was much stronger in this game. We remained calm and were really patient to execute our game plan, even though we were trailing late.”

Wong believes it is a type of win that can help propel Causeway Bay to greater heights.

“It was a big win for us, and keeps us on track for our targeted top two finish in Premiership A. We grabbed a key win on the last round of the year, which is a real morale booster and a result that really helped our team bonding.

“Our players have a better understanding of each other now, and because of that I think there is still a lot of room for improvement.

“They will only get better as time moves on. It’s really pleasing to see we have more stability at the club, which bodes well for our preparation for upcoming games,” Wong added.

The narrow victory, and a bonus point for Scottish for a loss within seven, keep Causeway Bay in third place heading into 2020, but they closed the gap on the second-ranked Kukris to one point, ten to nine.

In the other Premiership A clash, Kowloon turned in a convincing 24-10 win over bottom ranked Tai Po Dragons to collect a bonus point and rise to the top of the table on 15 points.

Scottish play Kowloon on 11 January in a game with significant table implications before wrapping up against Tai Po, while Causeway Bay has a chance to climb the table with two games against Tai Po and a final tie against Kowloon to close out the league, which resumes on 4 January.

The KPMG Premiership table remains unchanged - in terms of results as Societe Generale Valley turned up a convincing 32-0 win over Natixis HKFC Ice, while Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers held off Gai Wu Falcons 17-10 in the final round of the year.  Valley lead the log with 17 points, followed by Tigers on 10, with Gai Wu one further back and HKFC in fourth on three points.

Each team has been awarded a draw on the table, with cancelled matches from earlier in the Premiership unable to be rescheduled in 2020 due to fixture congestion.
