HKRU ANNOUNCE THEIR INTENTION TO HOST THE FIRST EVER POLICE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR

28th May 2018

The visit of the Rugby World Cup Trophy in Hong Kong last week proved an ideal occasion for the Hong Kong Rugby Union and Hong Kong Police Rugby Club to formally announce their intention to host the first ever Police International Rugby Championship next year, immediately prior to the RWC tournament in Japan.

Whilst there is a well-established international 7s competition for police officers in the bi-annual World Police & Fire Games (WPFG), there has never been a global 15s event before, and hopes are high that there will be a strong turn-out of men’s, women’s and veteran teams.  “We have already received expressions of interest from the likes of Australia, New Zealand, France, South Africa and the British police sides, and we are also confident of a strong turn-out from our Asian friends as well,” explained HKRU CEO Robbie McRobbie, himself a former police officer. “I was fortunate enough to participate in 3 WPFG tournaments, and I know how special these occasions are, not just with the fierce competition on the pitch, but the camaraderie and friendship off it.”

As you will have seen from our Facebook site, The event has been scheduled for the period up to 28 September, which would then allow all interested to head north to experience the first ever Rugby World Cup to be held in Asia. McRobbie continued; “We’ve got a Facebook site up and running, and we welcome any interest from both potential participating teams, individual players, referees and sponsors – we are truly honoured to be able to invite the law enforcement community to come together in Hong Kong in 2019, and we can promise it’s going to be a fantastic tournament!”

Vince Hole, Vice President for Australia Police Rugby Union and Co-Chair of the PIRC said; “We are very appreciative of Hong Kong Rugby Union hosting our event. It will be a great opportunity to combine the camaraderie  of policing with the culture of an international rugby event in a city that is famous for its rugby culture.”
