HONG KONG RUGBY UNION MOURNS PASSING OF MR. DON M WATSON OBE QPM CPM

14th Nov 2018

Mr Don M Watson OBE QPM CPM, HKRFU Chairman 1990-92

The HKRU is saddened to hear the news that former Chairman Don Watson passed away yesterday in Edinburgh.

Don had a distinguished rugby career both as a rugby player and an administrator, and held the office of Chairman from 1990-92, a period that saw great strides in the game at all levels from youth through to the national teams.

Don had an equally distinguished career in the Police, serving as both Aide De Camp to Governor Sir Robert Black as well as Deputy Director of Special Branch, before taking up the role of Commissioner of Customs and Excise.

After retiring to Scotland Don was still a regular visitor back to Hong Kong, particularly at Sevens time, and always took an active interest in news about local rugby and how the Union was progressing.

A true gentleman, he leaves behind a lasting legacy on our sport and will be remembered with great affection by members of both the rugby and Disciplined Services communities.

An event celebrating Don's life will be held around mid-February next year, but for now our thoughts and sympathy are with Amy and the rest of the family on their sad loss.
