HONG KONG RUGBY UNION WELCOMES HSBC WORLD RUGBY WOMEN’S SEVENS SERIES

14th Mar 2019

The Hong Kong Rugby Union is set to host the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series starting in 2020 after yesterday’s announcement by World Rugby that one of the eight legs of the 2020/21 Series will be staged here as part of next year’s Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

The move sees the Women’s and Men’s Series unite across one of the most spectacular and compelling weekends in global rugby, the 44-year old Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

Mr Robbie McRobbie, CEO of the Hong Kong Rugby Union commented on the announcement saying, “Hong Kong is excited at the opportunity to bring the best of women's sevens to the world's best sevens tournament.

“The inclusion of the women’s tournament is in line with our own push for gender parity in the competition and throughout Hong Kong Rugby, and reinforces our position as one of the top stops on the World Series. We await World Rugby's review of the qualification process, and further discussions on the overall tournament format.”

The women’s series will expand from six to eight tournaments next year with Hong Kong joining Dubai, Cape Town, Hamilton, Sydney and Paris as events hosting combined men’s and women’s tournaments. Standalone tournaments will also be held in Glendale, Colorado, USA, and Langford, British Columbia in Canada.

The move follows on Hong Kong’s hosting of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series qualifiers in recent years and from the city’s long tradition in the women’s game with the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament marking its 22nd year in 2019, again with series qualifier status.  Teams from 42 nations have played at the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens over the past two decades.
