10th Sep 2018

Having competed in the Rugby World Cup Sevens and won the Asian Games Rugby Sevens competition already in July and August, the Hong Kong Rugby Union Men’s Sevens squad is now preparing for the upcoming Asia Rugby Sevens Series, which kicks off in Hong Kong on 14-15 September 2018.

The squad had its first official training session after making history in Jakarta when Hong Kong beat Japan to claim its first ever Rugby Sevens gold medal.

The team is the first ever Hong Kong Rugby team to win gold at the Asian Games Rugby Sevens competition, beating rivals Japan in the final, and will be aiming at better result than their second placed finish on the Asian series in 2017.

The winners of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series advance to the World Rugby Sevens Series qualification tournament, which is played as part of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

The Asian Rugby Sevens Series 2018 will feature both men’s and women’s competition in Hong Kong.

Japan are the top seeds in pool A, alongside Sri Lanka, China and Chinese Taipei, while Hong Kong heads up pool B in the men’s competition ahead of South Korea, Philippines and Malaysia.

In the women’s competition, Japan (top seed), Hong Kong, Thailand and Korea will form pool C, while pool D houses China (top seed), Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Hong Kong’s final squad of the Asian Rugby Sevens Series expected to be announced soon.

Cado Lee said the squad won’t have any issues getting motivated for the tournament, “Our confidence is high and we knew that we can win the Series.  Although we met them at the Asian Games a few weeks ago, but we will not underestimate any opponents and must keep our winning attitude and determination.”
