Colts rugby forms the link from mini rugby to the senior game and is open to any eligible player registered with a Club or school. Leagues and competitions are organised on an age basis with age being determined by calendar year (i.e. January 1 to December 31). Currently, Colts play in under 14s, under 16s and under 19s. The Colts league has 52 teams playing in 9 divisions. The 2010/2011 season had 1,734 registered players (up from 1,665 the previous year).
The Colts rugby season typically starts at the end of August/early September and goes through to late March/early April with most tournaments and club trainings taking place on Sundays.
Colts players have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong on a national representative squad or to represent sub-parts of Hong Kong (e.g. Island or Peninsula Select teams).
Colts rugby for girls in Hong Kong is divided into U14, U16 and U19 leagues. The season starts from September and runs all the way through to April. Girls begin the first half of the season playing 15’s rugby and then move onto 7’s rugby towards the second half of the season.
This year there is the addition of the U19 Colts Championship 15’s which will run alongside the U19 Girls Colts league. This is a competition aimed to create an environment for U19 girls to further develop their rugby skills and increase opportunities to be seen by national age-grade selectors. Equal ability teams will be formed to play against each other with the idea to provide an opportunity for all players to experience a higher level of play than may be seen through the club competition.
