The World Rugby U20 Trophy has become a focal point for the Hong Kong U20s Programme since its inception in 2014. This tournament gives the opportunity for players to be tested against their peers at international level as Hong Kong play the likes of Samoa, Fiji, Japan and Namibia on an annual basis. Qualification as the Asian Representative at the U20 Trophy comes courtesy of winning the U19 Asia Championships, which Hong Kong have achieved over the past five years.

The Hong Kong U20s squad is made up of graduates from the National Age Grade Programme and incorporates players who have been identified and engaged from overseas, usually having left Hong Kong for school/university.

At the most recent U20 Trophy, Hong Kong finished in sixth place, beating hosts Romania in pool play and finishing above the likes of tournament regulars Canada. The next addition of the tournament is due to take place in São José dos Campos, Brazil, from 9-21st July 2019.

Throughput into senior programmes is a key component and indicator of success for the U20s. To date, one third of players who have represented Hong Kong at the World Rugby U20 Trophy have progressed into full-time athletes in the senior men’s programmes (HKSI Sevens & ERP 15s).
