HONG KONG BREEZE THROUGH BORNEO ON DAY ONE OF WORLD’S GREENEST SEVENS

19日 3月 2016

The Hong Kong men’s sevens squad breezed through the first day of the Borneo Sevens to finish atop pool A after the opening day’s competition. Hong Kong won all four of its matches, conceding just one try on the day to advance to tomorrow’s Cup Quarter Finals.

Hong Kong will face Australian side Palmyra (Pally Pirates), who finished fourth in Pool B, in the first Cup Quarter Final at 10.30am.

Hong Kong opened the tournament with a 52-0 win over ATM Blackhawks. Fifteen-a-side internationals James Cunningham (Sabre Kowloon) and Toby Fenn (Societe Generale Valley) both made their senior sevens squad debuts in the opening match, with Cunningham getting the start and Fenn coming into the front row as a reserve.

Hong Kong dispatched Singapore 29-0 in their second game, before overcoming local side Sabah Eagles by the same score in the third match. Despite conceding their first try of the tournament in the day’s final tie, Hong Kong ran out easy winners against the Belgium Barbarians, winning 47-7 to claim top honours in Pool A.

Hosts Borneo Eagles, with a roster laden with New Zealand club and Provincial players, look the most impressive of Hong Kong’s opponents as they topped Pool B without a loss after day one.

The Borneo Sevens is Hong Kong’s sole international warm-up event ahead of the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier, which will be played as part of next month’s Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens (8-10 April).

Hong Kong is grouped with Zimbabwe, Germany and Cayman Islands in Pool E of the Qualifier, the winner of which advances to next season’s HSBC Sevens Series.
