IN MEMORIAM – GLEN DOCHERTY

07日 9月 2022

The HKRU is sad to report that our Vice President Glen Docherty passed away last weekend in Edinburgh.

Glen was Chairman of the Union from 1983-85 but his influence on Hong Kong and Asian rugby stretched well beyond that period. He hailed from impressive sporting stock – his father played for Glasgow Rangers, his brother Jimmy was a Scottish rugby international, and both Glen and his nephew Craig were capped for Hong Kong.

Away from the pitch Glen had a long and illustrious career with Swire, and after hanging up his boots he then transferred his legendary attention to detail first in his role as Hong Kong Team Manager and subsequently to the Union board room. This was not only a period of great change and growth for local rugby, but also regionally, and Glen became Asia Rugby Treasurer working closely with the legendary Chairman Shiggy Konno.

After finishing his time in the Far East and returning to his native Scotland, he continued his involvement with the game back with Glasgow High Rugby Club.
He is described by all who were fortunate enough to play and work with him as wonderful company with a great sense of fun, and an individual who truly espoused the values of the game he loved.

Glen will be greatly missed, and on behalf of all the Hong Kong rugby community we extend our sincere condolences to his son Grant, daughter Allison and the family.
