DRAGONS SHOWCASE MATCHES SET TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT KAI TAK STADIUM

Both the men's and women's Hong Kong China Rugby Dragons will compete in exhibition curtain-raiser matches before the Hong Kong China vs Japan XV match at Kai Tak Main Stadium on Friday 24 October. Gates open at 4:30 PM, with the women's match kicking off at 4:45 PM and the men's match starting at 5:35 PM. Each match will last for 40 minutes, providing an excellent opportunity for Dragons players to perform at a state-of-the-art venue in front of a large audience. 

The Dragons programme is a local performance development initiative dedicated to nurturing rugby talent in Hong Kong. Established in 1990 by George Simpkins, and re-launched earlier this year, the Dragons Programme focuses on enhancing player development and creating pathways from community rugby to high-performance levels.

Salom Yiu Kam Shing, who leads the Men’s Dragons Programme, stated "The Dragons Men’s Showcase match will test high-potential local players that we have identified so far in the programme. This includes talented players that we have scouted across Premiership Clubs, selected Championship Clubs and our local collegiate programmes.”

"For this match, in the Dragons squad our senior players are mentoring junior players, and in the Dragons Select squad our senior players and players contracted at the Hong Kong Sports Institute are mentioning junior players.”

"Competing at Kai Tak is a major milestone for all players on the programme. The facilities and match atmosphere will allow young players to experience a high-tempo game and develop skills of pressure-management as well as giving them an opportunity to prove themselves to the coaching and selection staff."

Royce Chan, who heads the Women’s Dragons Program, said "The Dragons Women’s Showcase squads represent a diverse range of ages and club experiences, with most players invited based on their performance in our Women’s Development Group (WDG) last season. Already in this relatively new programme we have seen success, with a player recently called up for training with the Senior XVs, and five players who have transitioned from community rugby to Premiership and Premiership A Clubs.”

"This game is a valuable opportunity to assess each player's current form, and from there to nurture them in the next phase of development to hopefully see some progress into future Hong Kong China players.”

"Being recognised and getting to play on one of the best stadiums in the world is a great opportunity and will hopefully inspire future generations. Many are understandably a little bit nervous, but the main goal is for them to enjoy the experience."
