DRAGONS WOMEN'S XV CLAIM 1ST INTERNATIONAL WIN IN PROGRAMME HISTORY IN SINGAPORE

DRAGONS WOMEN'S XV CLAIM 1ST INTERNATIONAL WIN IN PROGRAMME HISTORY IN SINGAPORE

PUBLISHED ON 20 JUN 2026

Hong Kong China Rugby’s (HKCR) women’s development XVs squad, Hong Kong China Dragons, have claimed the first international win in the programme’s history after a comprehensive nine-try, 57-0 victory over Singapore Select yesterday in Singapore.

Dragons Head Coach Royce Chan was delighted with the result of this first interaction between the women’s development teams of Hong Kong China and Singapore.

"I am incredibly proud of the performance. Coming in, there is always a bit of nervousness because the players have not spent extensive periods together off the pitch. However, the chemistry clicked beautifully once we hit the ground. Huge credit goes to the entire management and coaching staff for their tireless work in backing this team and preparing them so thoroughly."

The Dragons XV proved too much to handle for their Singaporean counterparts as the visitors led by 20 points to nil after the opening 20 minutes and did not take their foot off the gas from there. Nearly the entire first half was played in Singapore’s end with the Dragons’ first scoring chance coming after just one minute of play when Singapore were penalised for being offsides at the ruck as they scrambled in defence.

The only blot on the Dragons’ copybook was an inability to finish off three attacking lineouts in the first quarter with the tricky timing plays not going to hand. Apart from that, the Dragons outplayed Singapore in every phase of the game, dominating in territory, possession and individual skill.

After failing to score from two early attacking lineouts, the Dragons made their third penalty chance count with a converted strike from flyhalf Cheng Lok Tung for a 3-0 lead after nine minutes.  With the gates now opened, the Dragons quickly multiplied their lead: scoring their first five-pointer just a minute later after some great rush defence from winger Leung Tsz Hin forced Singapore to cough up the ball deep in their half. Centre Sie-To Cheuk Man was the beneficiary as she pounced for the game’s first try to give the Dragons a 10-0 lead.

Scrumhalf Gillian Cheung scored in the 13th minute to finish a great line break from standout Leung Tsz Hin and push the lead to 17-0 after Cheng’s conversion. Lock Choi Ngai Lam completed a flowing Dragons attack that saw the ball pass along five backs before the forwards drove it over the whitewash with some clinical pick and go rugby.  Leung’s tally brought the score to 20-nil at the first quarter hydration break.

Singapore tightened their defensive effort and mounted their first real attacks of the match to start the second quarter, but they never threatened the Dragons try-line.

The visitors’ fourth try of the opening half came from a tap and go penalty inside Singapore’s red zone. The home side mustered some strong defence to stop multiple attacks on the line, but the Dragons shifted the attack out wide for winger Tse Tsz Yan who neatly turned the corner for a try to bring the lead to 25-0 at half-time.

A stung Singapore outfit came charging out of the blocks to start the second half and even briefly turned the tables on the Dragons, who found themselves defending their line for the first time. The Dragons defence did not disappoint as they repulsed the Singapore attack.  Normal service was resumed shortly thereafter with a second penalty from flyhalf Cheng on the Dragons first attack of the second half bringing the score to 28-0. The Dragons re-established dominance and added five further tries down the stretch.

The forwards paced the early scoring with lock AuYeung Lai Man finishing off some impressive work with ball in hand from front row reserves Riva Brill and Shea Ka Man for the side’s fifth try as the lead grow to 33 points.  Riva would get a just reward for her effort minutes later when she scored from a tap and go penalty in close to push the lead to 38-0.

Leung Tsz Hin capped an outstanding performance on the wing with a beautiful solo try beneath the posts from 20 metres out to push the lead to 45-0 on the hour marker after Cheng’s conversion.

A 67th minute try out wide brought the score to 50-0, before reserve scrumhalf Natalie Ireland produced some fancy footwork to tiptoe through traffic for the final try. Cheng added the conversion to bring the score to 57-0 and send the Dragons home with a momentum-building win.

“The sheer variety and execution of our tries were fantastic,” said Chan after the match.

“But the most rewarding aspect was witnessing the players' growth throughout this entire process. Seeing them take the structures we worked on in training and apply them under match-day pressure was outstanding.”

"It was an invaluable test for us. If we want to grow, we desperately need more consistent game time outside of Hong Kong in the XVs game. We are incredibly grateful to the Singapore Rugby Union for hosting us and for making this tour a reality. We need more partnerships like this to sustainably grow the women's XVs game, build our pathways, and make our senior teams stronger for the long term,” concluded Chan.

The squad will next play at home on 4 July when they headline a day-long celebration of women’s rugby at Hong Kong Football Club with a game against the Hong Kong China Rugby U23s squad.
