IN MEMORIAM – HAMISH BOWDEN

IN MEMORIAM – HAMISH BOWDEN

PUBLISHED ON 13 DEC 2025

It is with deep sadness that Hong Kong China Rugby shares the news that former representative star Hamish Bowden has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was just 53 years old.

Hamish represented Hong Kong between 1994 and 2001 at 15s, 10s and 7s with pride, toughness and humility. This includes playing in the 1994, 1996 and 1998 Asia Rugby Championships; the 1997 and 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens; and the 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 World Sevens Series. On the field, he was a fierce competitor – uncompromising, brave, and deeply committed to his teammates and the shirt. Off the field, he was a true gentleman: kind, generous with his time, and quietly supportive of those around him.

Those who played with or against Hamish will remember not just the way he competed, but the way he carried himself – with integrity, warmth and respect. He embodied the spirit of the Hong Kong rugby community and left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to share a pitch or a beer with him.

Above all else, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Mai, and a loving father to his two boys, Isaac and Elias. Our thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with them and with all of Hamish’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

A minute’s silence for Hamish will be observed at today’s match between Hong Kong Football Club and Valley.
