Hong Kong China lost its opening match at the World Rugby Nations Cup against perennial Rugby World Cup qualifiers Samoa, 66-19, at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile.

It was an historic first meeting between the two union’s men’s XVs although they are frequent competitors at sevens level.

Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) has named the squad for the opening match of the World Rugby Nations Cup 2026 against Samoa, ranked 20th in the world.

HKCR will play Samoa in the first meeting between the two unions at 15.00 on 4 July at the Estadio Nacional in Chile (03.00 Hong Kong time on Sunday, 5 July). The match will be live streamed on RugbyPass TV.

The named squad is primarily the same as the team that beat a Waikato NPC squad 24-22 last week in New Zealand, with head coach Logan Asplin and the selectors making few changes from the friendly.

Hong Kong China Men’s XVs have learnt their first three fixtures in the inaugural edition of World Rugby’s new Nations Cup.

The tournament features the team’s ranked 13-24 in the world rankings, with Hong Kong China ranked in 23rd place after an incredible 2026, which saw the team qualify for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 via their sixth consecutive Asia Rugby Championship win.
