HONG KONG CHINA MEN SECURE THE NOVEMBER FEST INTERNATIONAL TROPHY

Hong Kong, China men’s 15s team marked their second home match with a dominant 46-10 win with Sebastian Brien grabbing a hat-trick over Germany last Saturday at Aberdeen Sports Ground in front of over 2,000 enthusiastic fans.

Germany got on the board first with an early penalty to lead 3-0, but the home side answered strongly, with converted tries by wing  Matt Worley and prop Keelan Chapman inside the first 20 minutes giving Hong Kong a 14-3 lead.

Back came Germany - a defensive error in the 21st minute allowed Felix Lammers to saunter through the midfield and cross the line to bring the score to 14-10 after Edoardo Stella converted.

Hong Kong replied with a penalty, and then both teams battened down the hatches and put on impressive defensive displays with some shuddering tackles. The deadlock was not broken until just on the stroke of half time; a searching Paul Altier penalty found touch deep in German territory, and at the resulting lineout the Hong Kong set piece worked nicely, setting up a maul and then releasing Seb Brien to finish off the move which took the home team into the break with a 22-10 lead.

The visitors opened the second half strongly and put on a period of sustained pressure camped in Hong Kong’s half, which resulted in Mark Prior being shown a yellow card in the 48th minute. Germany failed to take advantage of their 10 minutes of numerical advantage however, and it was again the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with Seb Brien notching up his second try which stretched the lead out to 29-10.

This seemed to finally break the German defensive dam, and the final 15 minutes saw a brace of tries for exciting young debutant Murray Brechin, and a final score for the irrepressible Seb Brien to complete a well-deserved hat trick - the referee’s whistle saw the scoreboard read Hong Kong China 44, Germany 10.

General Manager of Performance Jo Hull felt Hong Kong, China had made significant strides over the Novemberfest two test series; ‘We are delighted to have capped 8 new players over the two games, and are particularly excited to see our two talented U20 players, Jude Harding and Tyler McNutt, progress through the system. We are building something special with this squad and it's great to see fresh faces from both Hong Kong and overseas joining our ranks again.’

Andrew Douglas, who had stepped into the Head Coach role for the series, expressed himself satisfied with how the campaign had gone; “ I’m very proud of the team's performance. We faced some tough challenges during today’s match, and we put ourselves in some poor situations, but the team managed to find their rhythm. We are also pleased to have had the opportunity to develop and showcase some new talent, which is truly exciting. Our aim is to strengthen our squad's depth for the future, and we look forward to some big games over the coming months.”

Germany coach Mark Kuhlmann said after the match, ‘We made too many mistakes and were unable to match the speed and intensity of the Hong Kong team. It's a bit frustrating, but that's the way of sports sometimes. We’ll come back stronger.’

Hong Kong China beat Germany 29-16 in the first Novemberfest on Tuesday, and were presented with the series trophy by German Consul-General Stefan Bredohl.
