It’s been another busy couple of weeks in the world of Hong Kong community rugby…here’s a brief look at some of our favourite stories!
Hong Kong’s Rugby Spirit is Alive and Well!
Over 700 primary school students descended on King’s Park Sports Ground last Saturday for the 2018 “Hong Kong’s Rugby Spirit” Fun Day. This UBS sponsored HKRU Community Foundation initiative focuses on introducing non-contact rugby to boys and girls along with the 7 priority values that the Education Bureau have identified for local students: “Perseverance”, “Respect”, “Responsibility”, “National Identity”, “Commitment”, “Integrity” and “Care for Others”. The course material was developed in conjunction with the Father Cucchiara Memorial School Principal.
Over 70 schools participated in the programme during the last academic year, making this one of the Union’s most successful school initiatives. Mark Panday, an Executive Director with UBS, joined in the closing ceremony, and UBS volunteer staff have been active throughout the year supporting both this programme and also “Tackling English” which is a secondary school initiative using sport as a medium to help build confidence in English language communication.
Don’t Drop the Ball Competition Day
The 9th annual “Don’t Drop the Ball” competition day was held on Tuesday 3rd July at King’s Park Sports Ground, with 46 school teams and over 600 students participating.
The programme is a joint initiative between the HKRU and the Police’s New Territories Crime Prevention Bureau, taking rugby and a healthy lifestyle message into local primary and secondary schools, encouraging youngsters to steer away from a life of crime and put their energy into sports and other positive activities.
Officiating guests at the closing ceremony included Tsuen Wan District Councillors Mr. Wong Chi-kwan and Ms Nixie Lam and for the record the Primary School champions were HKUGA for both boys and girls, while De La Salle took the girls’ secondary school title and Confucian Tai Shing Ho Kwok Pui Chun College the boys’.
Dolphins Tour to Manila
Aberdeen Dolphins youth players have recently returned from a tour to Manila, where they were lucky enough to play in a curtain-raiser against a Miriam College girls’ team before the Asia Rugby Division 1 Men’s match between the Philippines and Singapore.
The tour party consisted of 10 girls from Pui Tak Canossian College, one of the HKRU’s “Schools of Rugby”, and 4 boys from St Joseph’s College, and during their 5-day tour they enjoyed a hike to the Taal volcano, a visit to Intramuros, and they put on a community coaching session for boys and girls from the Haven for Children home and the Tuloy Foundation .
This was the second summer tour the Dolphins have arranged, and it would not have been possible without the support of the schools and parents, Coach Pompey Leung, and special thanks to Jake Letts and Jovan Masalunga from the Philippine Rugby Union for all their generous assistance and arrangements.
