South Africa’s men snared a drought-breaking first title and New Zealand’s women continued their dominance as the 50th anniversary of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens reached a thrilling crescendo on Sunday evening.
In a heaving Kai Tak Stadium packed with over 37,000 fans today and 113,395 fans across the weekend - South Africa blitzed defending Hong Kong champions Argentina 35-7 to secure their first Hong Kong Sevens win after years of heartbreak.

CATHAY/HSBC HONG KONG SEVENS PERFECTLY POISED FOR A GRAND FINALE FOLLOWING A DAY OF SCINTILLATING ACTION BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH
The 50th anniversary celebrations went up a notch at the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens on Saturday, with the Vengaboys nearly lifting the roof off Kai Tak Stadium and the heroes of 1976 in front of 41,457 fans.
During the traditional March Past featuring mini rugby players from all over Hong Kong and some of the game’s biggest names past and present, some of the trailblazers who took part in the very first Hong Kong Sevens back in 1976 saluted the raucous crowd.

The 50th anniversary of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens began with a bang at Kai Tak Stadium on Friday with a stunning opening ceremony supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
With the roof closed at the magnificent Kai Tak Stadium, the 34,000-strong crowd was entertained by a blockbuster show featuring South Korean K-pop girl group Primrose and Filipina singer-songwriter Gwyn Dorado.
