05th Sep 2017

The Hong Kong Rugby Union Community Foundation is delighted to announce the HKRU Charity Ball 2017 which will be held on Saturday, the 11th of November 2017, at the Convention Hall, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, with a special performance by the World Classic Rockers. Now on its 16th year, the black-tie event, a leading event in the Hong Kong social calendar, will raise funds for various programmes, with Po Leung Kuk (PLK) as main beneficiary.

The return of the World Classic Rockers is a much-awaited show brought about by their successful, unforgettable Hong Kong concert in 2008. The rock supergroup is composed of former members of some of rock’s greatest bands: Steppenwolf, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston and Kansas. They deliver an amazing show with a set list packed with legendary, classic rock hits like Born to be Wild, Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, Rock and Roll Band, Dust in the Wind, Free Bird, More Than a Feeling, and much more.

The annual fundraising event has raised over HK$ 88 million for education and rugby programmes that help the less privileged children to whom these opportunities would not be available. There are ongoing sports intervention projects in both primary and secondary schools to develop students’ life skills through the PLK/Corporate 7s/HKRU Tackling Life Rugby Programme and build their confidence in English language communication through the UBS Tackling English

Programme, which sits alongside the Po Leung Kuk English Language Training Centres that also receive support from the Ball. In addition, this summer 5 young girls from the residential care home were given the opportunity to join a rugby training camp in the UK, while 24 primary school students joined together in the first ever joint Po Leung Kuk sports team to participate in the National Youth Rugby Championships in Beijing – which they won! The players were selected from the schools in the PLK/Corporate 7s/HKRU Tackling Life Rugby Programme. PLK sent two teams, A and B, and from a total of 16 teams in the competition, the PLK team A won the champion trophy.

“The Hong Kong Rugby Union Community Foundation is very proud to be partnering with Po Leung Kuk, and together we are committed to helping youngsters in our community realize their potential through sport and education,” said Robbie McRobbie, CEO, Hong Kong Rugby Union. “The smiles on the children’s faces when they are playing on the rugby pitches built through generous donations are truly heartwarming and strengthen our passion and commitment to these projects.” The Foundation’s Tackling Life programme has introduced rugby to PLK youngsters in the residential care centre, learning centres and 21 primary schools, a total of over 3,500 students.

Funds are raised through individual and corporate donations, ticket sales, live and silent auction, and sale of raffle tickets.

Tickets for the HKRU Charity Ball are priced at HK$ 2,488. Guests will enjoy pre-dinner cocktails, a delicious four-course gourmet dinner complemented by high quality French and Italian wines, a fabulous concert by the World Classic Rockers, and a lively auction with London-based emcee and auctioneer, Addison Gelpey.
