COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AT THE SEVENS

19th Apr 2018

The recent Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens provided a great opportunity to showcase how the tournament proceeds are put to work for the other 51 weeks of the year supporting initiatives such as those under the HKRU Community Foundation. The Foundation uses rugby as a medium to help address social issues around health, education, disability, social inclusion and youth crime and enjoys a close relationship with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the official charity of this year’s Sevens, and also Friends of Asia.

Both the Community Foundation and Laureus were proud to support It's A Penalty campaign which used the Sevens as a platform to help prevent the abuse, exploitation and trafficking of children online and offline across the globe/

Through Laureus a group of youngsters from the CoolPlay project in South Africa had the opportunity to spend Sevens Week in Hong Kong interacting with youngsters from local charity Operation Breakthrough - read more HERE

One of the Community Foundation programmes Laureus are supporting is Deaf Rugby, and youngsters from the Society for the Deaf had the chance to attend the Friday of the Sevens, and made their own special video to mark the occasion- HERE

Another group of youngsters enjoying a day at the Sevens were participants from the HSBC Try Rugby programme, and they were joined by a very special guest - Hong Kong swimming sensation Stephanie Au, who revealed her secret past as a former HKRU staff member! read more HERE

Just before the Sevens the Community Foundation hosted their first Inclusive Rugby Fun Day, and you can read the positive impact of the experience on one young girl HERE

The Community Foundation's programmes reach into many other sections of society, including prison rugby, wheelchair rugby, and a team for domestic helpers, but none of these initiatives would be possible without the Sevens and the generous support of corporate and individual sponsors. If you'd like to help you might consider supporting one of our upcoming events whose proceeds help fund the Foundation, the Sevens Long Lunch on 5th October and the HKRU Charity Ball on 3rd November, contact [email protected] for details.
