HONG KONG CHINA 7S PREPARATIONS FOR 19TH ASIAN GAMES IN FULL SWING

27th Jul 2023

The Hong Kong China representative 7s teams have begun their preparations for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Initially postponed from September 2022, the 19th edition of the games will now be held from 23 September – 8 October 2023. The Hong Kong China men’s team will be launching a gold medal defence, while the women are vying for a podium place in the prestigious tournament.

With the competition only 8 weeks away, the men’s team recently travelled to Fo Shan for a series of friendly warm-up games against China men’s, a cross-border collaboration that was welcomed by head coach Jevon Groves:

“The trip to Fo Shan was a great opportunity to see the boys play after an intense 4-week training block and get them some game time.”

“China men’s were tough opposition so it was a very good chance for us to have a look at our team in a competitive environment and a great way to finish off our training block”.

Meanwhile, the women’s team have departed for a training camp in Canada in collaboration with the Canada, Japan and Australian women’s 7s teams. 16 girls have been selected by Paul John to attend – a strategic mix of senior players and young up-and-comers.

“This camp will give the girls a chance to play against top class sides and another opportunity to challenge themselves against some of the best players in world. Some of this squad have not played this level of opposition before, so we are really excited to take them and accelerate their development ahead of travelling to Hangzhou in September”, said John from Hong Kong.

Tickets for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games are on sale now, with the rugby tournament scheduled to take place on 24 – 26 September.
