ONE-SIDED AFFAIR IN THE KMPG WOMEN’S PREMIERSHIP

04th Nov 2017

The game of the week in the KMPG Women’s Premiership was a one-sided affair, with the Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers coasting home 45-0 against SCAA First Pacific Causeway Bay Phoenix.

Despite the side’s entering the match sitting third and fifth on the table, the result highlighted the gulf between the Premiership’s top handful of teams and the rest.

Tigers blew Phoenix out of the water in the first half, running in five tries on their way to a 31-0 lead at the break.

“We played very well against Gai Wu [last week in a 17-17 draw]and we tried to replicate that intensity and speed,” Tigers coach Fan Shun-kei said.

“This week we practiced some new stuff and we used the game to bring new elements to our game.

“We broke them apart in the first half and opened up the space, but unfortunately we had three mores chances to score tries but we didn’t execute.”

Nam Ka-man got things underway for the victors with a try in the eighth minute and Kwok Ka-hei, Natasha Olson-Thorne (twice) and MaellePicut got in on the act in a dominant first half.

Charlotte Myrans also saw plenty of action from the tee, slotting three of five conversion attempts.

A try to Wong Kai-ying and a third touch down for Olson-Thorne, both converted by Myrans, saw the Tigers push their lead out to 45 points after just 54 minutes. However, Phoenix dug deep and managed to match their more fancied opponents throughout the last quarter of the match.

“She [Olson-Thorne] is hungry for rugby because she was out last week, this week she scored three beautiful tries,” Fan said.

“Nam Ka-man had a very good game in defence and Lindsay Vartyand Jess Ho both played really well in terms of attack, they both made very good decisions and controlled the speed of the game very well.”

Tigers remain in third place after their win, within reach of the top two in SocieteGenerale Valley Black Ladies and the Eco Gai Wu Falcons.

The lopsided theme continued through the majority of the weekend’s other matches, with Valley continuing on their merry way with an 88-0 shellacking of Kowloon.

Six games into the season, Valley are well on the way to defending their grand championship crown after amassing 401 points and conceding only three.

Elsewhere, Gai Wu saw off the Transact 24 Tai Po Dragons 42-3, while Natixis HKFC Ice and City Sparkle duked it out in the round’s closest match, with HKFC prevailing 31-12.
