SCOTTISH SET FOR HOME OPENER AGAINST VALLEY IN ROUND 3 OF RUGBYPASS.COM PREMIERSHIP

06th Oct 2016

Two rounds in and all of the talk surrounding the HKRU RugbyPass.com Men’s Premiership is focussed on just how even the competition is shaping up to be, with only Societe General Valley undefeated and Natixis HKFC the only side yet to notch a victory.

Round three sees Valley face Bloomberg Hong Kong Scottish at Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon tackle HKFC at King’s Park and Herbert Smith Freehills HKCC face off against Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers at Aberdeen, with all matches scheduled for 4.30pm.

The match between the Premiership’s two form teams - Scottish and Valley - promises big things. Scottish impressed in its first two matches and Valley still look like the pacesetters, even if they are a touch off their irresistible best of last season.

Valley is still working towards its peak and coach Andrew Kelly is hoping for continued improvement. “We’re by no means polished yet, we’ve still got along way to go to develop our game, but I’m happy that we’ve got the two wins under our belt so far,” Kelly said.

“I expect Scottish to be good at the breakdown, they’ve got a pretty good back row so we’ve got to be good on our own ball and make sure we are taking care of their back row.”

Scottish were impressive in last week’s victory against HKFC and coach Craig Hammond is hoping that home advantage can help his side find the extra gear required to match Valley.

It is Ladies Day at the rock and Hammond hopes a boisterous crowd, coupled with a week of focussed training and the form play of the likes of new recruits Conor Hartley and flanker Ewan Miller will hold his charges in good stead.

“We’re playing at home. We call it our rock and we try to defend our rock,” he said.

“A lot of Saturday is going to be about us making sure our house is in order. We are under no disillusions about what is coming and we are going to have to be at the top of our game to combat Valley.

“They are a set piece dominant team - at scrum and lineout they are very dominant. They keep the ball well and they put you under pressure with their field position.”

The match between HKFC and Kowloon is filled with intrigue, with Kowloon showing with its one point win over HKCC that it is a serious threat this season.

HKFC is keen to find its first win of the season, although coach Phil Bailey knows significant improvement is needed. “We started to click in certain parts of the game [against Scottish], it was just ball retention that was the big thing,” he said. “We made double the handling errors of Scottish and they made us pay.”

Tom Isaacs and Mat Lamont have shown good early season form and will be crucial against a Kowloon side that Bailey says are “very clinical” at the breakdown.

The loss of Pierce MacKinlay-West to a shoulder injury - having just returned from injury - is a blow for Bailey, but he is far from panicking at this early stage of the season.

“No one wants to be 0-3 and we want to win because it’s good for the confidence, but it’s not the end of the world because we are continually building,” Bailey said.

“It’s so stop and start with the international windows that we are confident that once we get a bit of momentum we will be hard to stop. It is just a matter of putting the pieces together and coming good at the right time.”

HKCC will be desperate to get back on the winners list after a last gasp loss to Kowloon and will be confident of doing so at home against Tigers.

Winger Brad Raper and fullback James Loves have been shining lights in their side’s solid start to the season and will again be key on the grass at Aberdeen.

“We have the advantage of playing on grass and we train on grass,” HKCC team manager Richard Cooke said. “I think in Hong Kong it is a bit of a myth that you have home advantage, but it will be on a piece of grass which will be different from anybody else.”

Cooke is well aware that Tigers will be no pushover after a strong effort against Valley last week, touching on the evenness of the competition.

“This year’s competition looks like it is going to be much more even than in previous years, so I don’t think even Valley are thinking there are going to be easy games,” he said.
