SUPER XV LAUNCHES HK RUGBY TO NEW HEIGHTS

14th Apr 2023

Rugby fever continues to reign supreme in April! The Hong Kong Rugby Union is excited to welcome a brand-new format to the roster this Saturday, with the launch of a barbarian style competition called Super XV

We’ll be matching up the best talent from across the Nan Fung Group / SEWIT Premiership into a double-header, filtered into a Hong Kong China Dragons men’s and women’s team versus a World XV men’s and women’s team.

The Hong Kong China Dragons men’s and women’s teams are comprised of our best Hong Kong China Qualified talent and is likely to be a preview for international selection for the upcoming Asia Rugby Championships (ARC). Positioned as a level up from the Hong Kong domestic competition, the Hong Kong China Dragons women’s and Head of Women's Rugby Performance Royce Chan has high expectations for her squad:

“This is an exciting opportunity for our players to come together as a group ahead of several upcoming international fixtures, and test themselves against the best in class from the HKRU Premiership”

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to develop our talent and give them as best a preparation for international competition as possible. This is the perfect platform for them to have a hit out and we’re looking forward to seeing a good standard of rugby on display.”

Hong Kong China Dragon’s Men’s captain Tommy Hill, hailing from Natixis Hong Kong Football Club is equally tantalised by the prospect of some good competition:

“It’s very special to get back together with this group. I feel like we made some great strides over the last year, and it’s really exciting to see the younger generation of Hong Kong lads coming through.

“Games like these are a perfect opportunity for them to stake their claim for a spot in the ARC. It’s also a great opportunity for more representative rugby for players in the premiership who are not Hong Kong China qualified, so all in all, a great concept and I hope people get behind it!”

Fresh off the back of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and a rousing display of support at the recent Premiership Grand Champs, local rugby fans can keep the momentum going at Hong Kong Football Club - entry is free, and F&B is available for purchase for non-members.

Men’s kick off at 2:45pm, with women’s following at 5:15pm. If you’re not able to join us on Saturday, you can catch all the action live on Cluch TV.
