VALLEY KEEP HEAT ON WITH WIN OVER TIGERS

22nd Jan 2017

Societe Generale Valley beat Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers 43-3 in tonight’s KPMG Women’s Premiership Game of the Week at Happy Valley.

In other KPMG Premiership action, CPM Gai Wu Falcons feathered their nest at the top of the table with a 73-3 win over Natixis HKFC, although Valley have three games in hand on the league leaders.

It was another Valley onslaught at King’s Park as the defending Grand Champions put Tigers away early with three tries in the opening 20 minutes, before a lapse in concentration saw them drift for the remainder of the half.

Despite the speed bump, Valley accounted for seven tries with flanker Olivia Coady and No.8 Amelie Seure both collecting braces, while Nadia Cuvelier, Zoe Smith and Caitlin Spencer added tries of their own. Smith added four conversions.

Valley coach James Elliot credits a tough Tigers pack and a lack of cohesion due to a number of new players out wide as partial reasons for the drift.

With several injuries to key players, Elliot called up more new players this weekend. Hong Kong mainstays Adrienne Garvey, Colleen Tjosvold and Stephanie Cuvelier were all out of the backline this afternoon but are expected back for the Football Club match on Thursday.

“Tigers were really strong at the scrums and dominated us on a few occasions,” said Elliot.

“We also had a lot of unforced errors due to a lack of cohesion in the backs as there were quite a few replacements today, some of whom hadn’t trained together or even played yet this season. But we were able to run out the full side in the end and still have four weeks remaining to work on that cohesion before the Grand Championships which are very much our focus,” Elliot added.

With four tries coming from the unit, Elliot gave due credit to his back row trio of flankers Coady and Toto Cheng and No.8 Seure for holding up to the Tigers challenge.

“Amelie and Olivia combined really well and Toto was everywhere causing problems for the Tigers, She was a real livewire.”

Adrienne Davis, promoted from the club’s NL1 side this afternoon, performed well as did Spencer, who scored Valley’s opening try on her first match for the club in five years after recently returning to Hong Kong.

Some extra tackling practice is likely on the cards this week after two Valley players were sin-binned in the final ten minutes for high tackles, allowing Tigers to put their only three points on the board in the 76th minute.

The three points given away bring Valley’s total points conceded to just 21 over eight games this season.

Kowloon were left frustrated after losing narrowly to Causeway Bay in a match where it enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but saw the result slip from their hands through unforced errors.

Tonight’s results see Falcons extend their lead at the top of the table to 44 points. Valley, who moved to eight wins and no losses, are in second with games in hand on 39 points and could close the gap with a win in their first make up match against Football Club on Thursday.

Tigers slip to five wins and four losses and are in a distant third with 25 points, just four ahead of fourth-placed Football Club on 21 points. Causeway Bay improved to four wins against five losses with 16 points while Kowloon stay in sixth place with 6 points. City Sparkle were on bye this weekend are in seventh place.
