VALLEY TOPPLE CAUSEWAY BAY IN KPMG PREMIERSHIP ACTION

20th Oct 2018

The top sides in the KPMG Women’s Premiership all emerged unscathed from the third round action this afternoon.

Two unbeaten sides remain after Societe Generale Valley overpowered SCAA First Pacific Causeway Bay, 43-5, in the KPMG Premiership Game of the Week, while defending league and grand champions Gai Wu tarnished Plastic Free Seas City Sparkle’s record 58-0.

Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers mauled Kerry Hotel Kowloon 37-10 to stay third in the table with ten points off of two wins and a loss (to Valley), while Natixis HKFC beat Transact 24 Tai Po Dragons 27-24 in a thriller with three tries scored inside the final ten minutes.

Ahead of today’s Game of the Week, Causeway Bay had been out to keep the scores low, but they ultimately failed in that objective, conceding 31 points to a red-hot Valley in the opening half.

Player-coach Bella Milo continues to be a wrecking ball for Valley, contributing a hat trick of tries in the opening half, including the game’s first two scores in the second and tenth minutes.  Milo concluded her hat trick with a try on the stroke of half time in what was another fertile day with ball in hand as she extends her try tally to seven over the past two weeks.

No.8 Suzanne Sittko and centre Zoe Smith added tries for Valley in the opening half, with Smith also notching three of five conversions.

Causeway Bay did well to staunch the bleeding in the second half, holding Valley to two late scores in the final 12 minutes in the eventual 43-5 loss. Phoenix also managed to get the first points on the board to start the second half when prop Tsang Siu Ching scored early on.

But Valley eventually ran their total to 43 after fly half Rebecca Thompson scored a brace in the waning moments with Smith adding a conversion.

Transact 24 Tai Po Dragons’ match with Natixis HFKC at Sports Road was today’s most dramatic affair, with Club eking out a 27-24 win after the sides exchanged tries in the final minutes.

The game was tied 5-all to start the second half when Football Club opened up some space with tries to captain Rachel Fong and centre Elizabeth Musgrove to push the hosts’ lead to 15-5 after 55 minutes.

Dragons roared back with a brace of tries of their own down the stretch, retaking the lead at 19-15 after both conversions were successful.

A thrilling final ten minutes ensued, with Football Club surging back to the front, 20-19, after Musgrove’s second try.

Stephanie Sheng’s conversion was successful, giving Football Club a 22-19 lead, but only momentarily, as Dragons leapt ahead just two minutes later with a try, putting them in the driving seat despite the missed conversion as they lead 24-22 with eight minutes left.

Scotland Sevens representative Musgrove took command once again, completing a natural hat trick with a third try in the 75th minute. It was Musgrove’s third try inside the last ten minutes of games in as many weeks and her sixth overall to start the season.

With the fireworks well and truly spent from both sides, Football Club held off Dragons as time expired to claim a climactic 27-24 win.

Week three’s results leave the league table primarily intact with undefeated sides Gai Wu and Valley tied for first on 15 points, followed by Tigers in third on 10 points and Causeway Bay in the crucial fourth place at the moment on nine points. Football Club (6), Kowloon (5), Dragons (2) and City (0) bring up the bottom half of the table with the leagues splitting into Premiership and Premiership A competitions after Christmas.
