Last week we spent an insightful morning at the Accenture offices, hosting a media event for the upcoming Mitsubishi Estate Super Rugby Match, which will see the Hito-Communications Sunwolves take on the DHL Stormers, May 19 th at Mong Kok
stadium.

Head coach, and coach of the National Japan team, Jamie Joseph, alongside co-captains Yutaka Nagare and Willie Britz joined us on live-stream from Johannesburg to talk form, supporters, and the benefits of playing one of their three away games of the season in Hong Kong.

The overriding theme of the media event was this; Hong Kong has such a strong local rugby support network, so Super Rugby will be an excellent addition to the already fantastic season for local rugby fans, following the Natixis Rugby Cup in February.

CEO of the HKRU Robbie McRobbie set the scene of the events leading up to the Super Rugby match in May, highlighting the Natixis Rugby Cup and of course, the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens in April, resulting in an exciting season for local rugby fans in Hong Kong. He said he was confident that fans will flock to the game, and accented the importance of returning to Mong Kok stadium (for the first time since 2012) in the HKRU’s ever-rolling goal of raising awareness and participation of the game within the local community.

Jamie Joseph, previous coach of the Highlanders, now coach of Sunwolves and the National Japan team, showed equal excitement of playing this anticipated match in Hong Kong. Co-captain Yutaka Nagare agreed, and looks to grow the love of rugby in Hong Kong, hoping to see some familiar faces over in Japan next year, to support the Asian teams playing in the World Cup.

Willie Britz, the second co-captain of the Sunwolves concurred, he explicitly said ‘the fans are not the problem’ in Hong Kong, using the upcoming Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens as an example of the rugby fever that takes over Hong Kong when a high level event comes to town.

There are of course challenges of introducing a Japanese team into the Super Rugby league, and Joseph highlighted the issues with intensity and timing crossovers with the National side and Super Rugby. However his defining line was ‘We are not South Africa, we are not the All Blacks, we are not Australia, we are Japan’ and he hoped to show this through the caliber of rugby they play, and the way they conduct themselves as a team. He believes they owe it to the fans to show true Japanese rugby, positioning Sunwolves as THE Super Rugby team for Asia, and hopes the Hong Kong crowds will appreciate this. 

Linking this to our own rugby set up here in Hong Kong, Joseph said he was surprised by how professional Hong Kong rugby has become over the last few years and he can only envision improvement in the following years.

ブログ1 - サンウルブズ vs. ストーマーズ 先週のある日の午前中、アクセンチュア社のオフィスで開かれたメディアイベント。来る5月19日に旺角スタジアムでヒト・コミュニケーションズ サンウルブズがDHLストーマーズに挑む「三菱地所スーパーラグビー2018」の試合をめぐり、洞察に満ちたやりとりが展開されました。

サンウルブズと日本代表チームのヘッドコーチを兼任するジェイミー・ジョゼフ氏が、流大、ヴィリー・ブリッツ両キャプテンと共にヨハネスブルグからライブストリームに参加。チームの調子やサポーターのこと、シーズン中3つあるアウェー試合の1つを香港で戦うことのメリットについて語りました。

メディアイベントの最重要テーマは、「香港には、地元ラグビーサポーターの強力なネットワークがあり、2月のナティクシス・ラグビーカップに続いてスーパーラグビー戦を開催でき、地元ラグビーファンにとっては夢のようなシーズンになる」というものでした。

HKRU（香港ラグビー協会）のロビー・マクロビーCEOは、5月のスーパーラグビー戦までに行われる各種のイベントを紹介。特に強調したのが、前述のナティクシス・ラグビーカップはもちろん、これも地元ラグビーファンを沸かせている4月のキャセイパシフィック・HSBC香港セブンズです。同CEOは、「この試合に大勢のファンが集まることは間違いない」とコメント。その上で、協会が掲げる永遠の目標「地元コミュニティーにおける試合の認知度と参画意識の向上」には、（2012年以来となる）旺角スタジアムへの回帰が大きな意味を持つと力説しました。

ハイランダーズのコーチを退任後、サンウルブズと日本代表チームのコーチに就任したジェイミー・ジョゼフ氏は、「自分もこの試合を香港で戦うことにワクワクしている」と発言。キャプテンの流大も、「同感だ。香港の皆さんのラグビー熱がさらに高まることだろう。来年はぜひ日本に来て、ワールドカップを戦うアジア各国のチームを応援してほしい」と語りました。

それに頷いたサンウルブズのもう1人のキャプテン、ヴィリー・ブリッツ。香港でハイレベルな試合が行われるたびに街で吹き荒れるラグビーフィーバーについては、来るキャセイパシフィック・HSBC香港セブンズを例にあげ、「香港のファンは大丈夫」と太鼓判を押しました。

日本チームがスーパーラグビー・リーグで戦うのは、もちろん簡単なことではありません。ジョゼフ監督からは、体力的な負担や、国内の試合とスーパーラグビー戦のタイミング調整など、参戦に伴う困難の数々が紹介されました。それでも最後には、「我々は南アフリカでもオールブラックスでもオーストラリアでもなく、日本代表チームだ。それを選手たちのプレイ能力や、チームとしての振舞いを通してお見せするだけ」と言い切ったジョゼフ監督。「サンウルブズをアジア随一のスーパーラグビー・チームと位置付け、本物の日本のラグビーを見せることは、ファンに対する義務だと考えている。香港の観客の皆さんには、そんな我々のラグビーを楽しんでもらいたい」とも。

続いて、ここ香港のラグビー事情にも言及。「香港のラグビーがここ数年で遂げた進歩には目を見張らされる。これからますます強くなるだろう」と期待を寄せました。
